EPISODE SLICE #62: A Transformative Experience in Sweden Leads to a Career at Go Abroad

Another Go Abroad member is on the show today – Rachael VanDerWerff! She is not only an esteemed baker in the kitchen, but she’s also the Operations Coordinator for Go Abroad. She’s on to talk about studying in Sweden and how it eventually led to her position at Go Abroad. Weirdly, when I started to edit this episode, I noticed that only the audio was captured in this interview. This is some sort of fluke that has never happened before. I know you won’t be able to see Rachael’s lovely face, but you can still see her picture and listen to her words of wisdom.

Here’s what we discuss:

  • How she originally wanted to study in England but ended up in Sweden and loved it
  • The courses in English that she took in Sweden
  • How she got around in Sweden without knowing the language
  • Her living situation – a renovated hospital with international students!
  • How she funded her study abroad experience
  • Something she would do differently if she could go back in time
  • Her personal transformation while abroad and what she learned about herself and others
  • How she transitioned from being a teacher in South Dakota to working at Go Abroad in Colorado
  • How studying abroad and working as a study abroad peer advisor at South Dakota State University helped her land her job with Go Abroad
  • Her biggest piece of advice for people interested in choosing to go abroad long-term

Special thanks to Rachael VanDerWerff!
