EPISODE SLICE #72: Taking a Sabbatical to Work on Microfinancing Projects in South America

My guest today is Jeff Bochsler, who is the man behing the website and book Be Multinational. He’s on to talk mainly about how he took a sabbatical to work on microfinancing projects in South America.

Here’s more of what we talk about:

  • His book on how ordinary citizens made living abroad a reality
  • An easy explanation of microfinance
  • How he was able to take a four-month sabbatical
  • What he did as a Kiva volunteer in South America
  • The importance of “multinational maintenance” when you come back home

… and so much more!

Also, I have big announcement at the end of this video that you will want to hear.

    Hello:

You have the gears in my head turning! We lived in Central America for a while working as educators. We have often thought of ways to go back and help, but also make a living. Thanks!

Glad Jeff was able to turn some gears! He got me thinking as well, and I am now interested in microfinance and have set aside some time to explore Kiva more thoroughly.

Love this! I interned with a nonprofit in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, two summers ago, and their partner organization was a microfinance org. So incredible to see how empowered their community became – and how it’s continuing to improve. Hmm, maybe another adventure is on the horizon for me? :)

      Hi Kristen,

Thanks for writing! I just checked out your site… It’s great! Where are you in the world right now? I think that microfinancing is really interesting and can’t wait to explore the field more. Hope you and Jeff are able to connect. Keep me posted on what’s in store for you.

Thanks! I just relaunched it (previously it was Positively Unconventional) and discovered with more writing that focusing on social justice and ways to embark on meaningful adventures was more up my alley. :)

Right now, I’m based in Chicago, but I’ll be traveling to the West Coast this coming July, then up to UP Michigan, and after that? Who knows. Looking to build something out of Wander to Connect, travel more and maybe work overseas!

Holler if you come to southern CA! I was UP Michigan last summer. Beautiful.

Will do! Yeah, UP Mi is amazing. My aunt’s lived up there off the grid next to a state park. Going up to check out the Pow Wow (huge Native American population up there.)
