Besides taking the cake for the best background in an Atlas Sliced interview, my guest Scot Sustad is the co-founder of The Arrival Store. For those who don’t know, the Arrival Store is THE most useful website when preparing to move to Korea. That’s not their motto… It’s just my personal opinion. As mentioned in the interview, I wish The Arrival Store was around when I taught in Korea a few years ago. It would have been extremely helpful.

So what does The Arrival Store do? They sell products and packages of must-have items than can be super time consuming to find on your own. It’s pretty much a one stop shop for getting settled in Korea. Things like cell phones, water purifiers, sheets, and mattress pads are much harder to find and set up than people think. The Arrival Store takes away the stress and frustration of having to do this yourself, so you can explore and get acquainted with your new country.

Scot and I talk about how and why he founded The Arrival Store, setting up an international business, and the importance of building trust both with customers and Koreans.

I encourage anyone interested in teaching or moving to Korea to check out The Arrival Store. It’s genius.

The interview with Bruce is two-fold. First, Bruce and I discuss his fascinating background and how International TEFL Academy came to be (minutes 1-19 ish). Then, for the remainder of the interview, we pivot into details about teaching abroad and cover the following topics:

Biggest markets for English teachers and emerging markets

Motivations of English learners

What gets taught in an English language class

The types of people who tend to go abroad to teach

How ITA provides detailed information about teaching English in specific countries

The types of classes offered with ITA (online and in-person) and how they meet the standard certification requirements for teaching English

How ITA helps graduated TEFL students find jobs after they complete the certification process

Today, I want to introduce you all to Atlas Corps (not to be confused with Atlas Sliced). I’m sure you’ve heard about the Peace Corps, right? Basically, Americans go overseas to help with social and economic development in other countries in need.

Atlas Corps is like the Peace Corps in reverse. They recruit some of the brightest nonprofit professionals from other countries and bring them to the U.S. for a fellowship program, where they volunteer at some of the best nonprofit organizations like Ashoka, the UN foundation, the Worldwatch Institute, and many more. It’s a win-win for both sides because the fellows gain important experience and leaderships skills, while the nonprofit organizations get super smart, worldly fellows working on meaningful projects. And, they both share “best practices” with each other.

What’s also great is that these fellows can take what they have learned during their year-ish long fellowship at the nonprofit organizations and use their new leadership skills and “best practices” in their country of origin (and other countries) to continue to work for social change.

Now why is this important? The world’s biggest problems will be only be solved through global collaboration and international exchange. We need more global engagement and sharing of ideas across borders to make big changes.

Atlas Corps is a very prestigious and competitive program, and if you’re interested, here’ the link to apply.

As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts on what you think about solving the world’s problems through global collaboration. Feel free to leave a comment!

It’s a bit opinionated, but in general, the site is very helpful and informative, specifically this post.

For hagwons (private schools), I highly recommend reading Adventure Teaching’s Let’s Be Frank section. I have mentioned this before, but it doesn’t hurt to mention it again! Additionally, getting TEFL certified will give you a leg up. International TEFL Academy is the place to go for that.

I am so excited about today’s episode slice! Why? To begin, my guest is super awesome. And secondly, it’s my first FACE-TO-FACE video interview! The setup is super ghetto, but I had a great time. My guest is Susan Shain, the face behind Travel Junkette. She’s all about spreading the message that you don’t need to slave away saving money in a 9-5 job and then travel the world. You can do it NOW via seasonal and adventure jobs.

Susan and I talk about what kinds of jobs she has held and how she supports herself financially. What I love is that through her freelance work, she is developing skills that she can take with her to the workplace if she ever decides she wants to settle down. But, I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

Here are a few more things that we discuss:

Volunteering in Nicaragua with kids at La Esperanza Granada

How she makes money through her blog and other freelance gigs and how she found these opportunities

Her seasonal job in Alaska

Ways to get started doing seasonal jobs or working abroad

How social media has helped her connect with new people

I wanna tell you a quick story. When I decided to teach English in Korea few years ago, I was super excited. A new country, new food, new sights to see, and new people to meet. I thought it would be rainbows and butterflies. I was wrong.

Turns out I had major culture shock at work. I didn’t know how to act. I offended the Korean staff, and they offended me. It was pretty much a nightmare, and I almost went home. I never thought I’d ever get culture shock because I had never experienced it before. In hindsight, I should have read more about the work culture and should have done more research when choosing a recruiting agency. Good recruiting agencies help you prepare for what lies ahead.

So, I’m going to do you a favor and save you some research. After talking to lots of English teachers in Korea (and being a former teacher there myself for two years), I have narrowed down the top five recruiting companies. Keep in mind that these picks are based solely on my own informational interviews. Time and time again, these names have popped up, so I decided that they needed a shout-out.

A note on recruiters: If you have never been to Korea before, getting a job through a recruiting company will relieve a lot of stress for you, IF you choose a company that is honest and will help you prepare for your new transition.

Here are the top recruiters:

1) Adventure Teaching (Korea specific) – Adventure Teaching has a fantastic “Let’s Be Frank” section on their website highlighting “What others don’t tell you” and “What to expect at work.” I believe that all recruiting companies need to have something like this on their websites to show what it’s really like and how to overcome language and cultural barriers.

Facebook
Twitter

2) Appletree Global Recruiting (Korea specific) - Appletree has been mentioned to me a bunch, but they don’t seem to be on social media.

3) Reach to Teach (recruits for many countries)

Facebook
Twitter

4) Teach Away (recruits for many countries)

Facebook
Twitter
Google+
LinkedIn

5) WorknPlay (Korea specific) – One of the biggest recruiting companies for ESL teachers in Korea. They have no social media accounts either.

BONUS: Get the Edge Up – A new study + teach + volunteer abroad organization. While they don’t have programs in Korea yet, they are awesome and unique because they focus on personally assisting and mentoring you before and during your time abroad — Something that teachers really need when they make the move abroad!

Do you know of any other recuiting agencies that you think should be on the list? Let me know!
