Casey Hynes, a writer, editor, and novel consultant in Beijing, China is in the house today! She talks about her progression from quitting her great job in Washington, DC to teaching in Korea and China to going back to her true passion (writing) in Beijing.

I talked to her all the way from Thailand, where she was taking a little vacay and doing some work as she travels. What a great life!

Here are some more highlights and insights from the interview:

  • The work culture as an ESL teacher in Korea
  • The hardships of managing a classroom as a beginner teacher
  • Culture shock
  • How she transitioned from teaching to writing in China
  • Why she thinks traveling will make you a better writer
  • Why holding off on grad school in order to travel (if you can) is a good idea
  • Tips for people looking to go into the writing field in China and beyond
  • The importance of setting your own professional standards in the writing world

Hi Alexa, This one has lotsa good info for people considering long term travel abroad. I liked Casey’s candid comments on adapting to cultural differences, how she handled money frustrations, how she protected herself with contracts, and how she maintained professional standards. I knew about Korea, but had no idea that there are so many ops for expats in Beijing. Nice job! And yeah, love those bloopers. HAHAHA – You really do look naked there, but just for a split second. LOL
